Fossil Exhibition.
Since the 1980s, Mölten (Meltina) has been richer
by one more attraction. Almost by accident, a unique
find was stumbled upon in 1980 when the town administration
began to use the quarry at the Mölten Pass. In
subsequent years, under the energetic leadership of
the then mayor and mineral collector, Franz Josef
Karnutsch, a separate, freely accessible area for
the presentation of the fossils came into being. The
fossil exhibition displays the most beautiful finds
from the area, whose landscape - steep slopes, gorges
and rock walls down to the Adige Valley, gentle mountain
pastures, forests and Alpine meadows up to the 'Stoanernen
Mandln' (Stone Men) - is the result of a geological
process over millions of years. The petrified wood
fossils, which are around 260 million years old and
come for the most part from the quarry at the Möltner
Pass, are especially worthy of attention.
