San Severino Lucano.
It was built in the XV century, when the Sanseverino
from Bisignano gave the manor and the surrounding
land to the monks of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria
del Saggittario. These monks, as a sign of gratitude,
called this place ‘Casale di San Severino’.
In the Main Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, built
in 1500, it is possible to see a Cross used in processions
dating from 1600, a wooden Crucifix dating from 1500,
a precious ostensory, several paintings dating from
1600 and a wooden sculpture dating from 1500, representing
the Deposition of Christ, by Guido Mazzoni. In this
Church the statue of the ‘Madonna del Pollino’
is kept. This statue is worshipped during one of the
most important religious events in Basilicata. In
the cave in which, according to the tradition, the
statue of the Madonna in Byzantine style had been
found, there is the Sanctuary of the ‘Madonna
del Pollino’.
In the area around this village there are many water
mills dating from the XVIII and the XIX centuries,
almost all along the Stream Frido.
