Latronico.
This area was inhabited in the past, as proved by
the findings, in a cave, of some objects in stone
and of some ceramics dating from the Bronze Age, which
are now kept in the museum of Potenza.
Inside the Church of Sant’Egidio Abate, patron
of this village, there are a statue of the Saint in
alabaster, a cross dating from 1500 and an ostensory
of 1766. San Nicola’s Church (XV century) has
a relevant portal. Many palaces, such as ‘Palazzo
Comunale’, ‘Palazzo Gioia’ and ‘Palazzo
Arcieri’ also have very beautiful portals. This
village is also famous for its thermal spa.
In Latronico artisans craft objects in stone. In
the Alpi Mountain there are several deposits of pyrite,
marble, quartz, talc and white alabaster. The latter
is well known for its resistance and smoothness and
is called ‘Marmo di Latronico’. Near the
village there is the ‘Grotta di Latronico’,
with stalactites and stalagmites, and, under it, some
little Sepulcral Caves.
