In the town centre there are old noble buildings
such as the town hall, ex-monastery of the Friars
Minor, and the XVII century ‘Palazzo Materi’,
which is characterised by cornices in Baroque style.
The XVII century mother church of San Giovanni
Battista and the church of the Madonna del Carmine
are very beautiful from an artistic point of view.
Near Caracoia, in a picturesque landscape, it is
possible to admire the famous clay ‘calanchi’
(ravines).
The town, whose economy is mostly based on agriculture,
is surrounded by cereal fields and olive groves.
The ‘giardini di Grassano’ (Grassano
gardens) are well-known: they are small family-run
farms, situated near the river Basento, where vegetables,
grapes, peaches and olives are grown.
