Giudicarie e Terme di ComanoStenico.
This village is historically very important and is
situated in a hollow which consists of the Dos della
Forra in the North opening towards the gorge of the
River Sarca in the South. It features many houses
typical of the Valli Giudicarie and noble buildings.
Many archaeological findings suggesting that this
area was inhabited in the prehistoric era. These findings
(Bronze objects and Roman coins) were found in the
area of Calferi.
The importance of Stenico during the Middle Ages is
proved by the fact that its castle was the residence
of the Prince Bishop Bernardo Clesio and, for a long
time, of the Episcopal captain of the Valli Giudicarie
and his whole court. The rich history of this village
influenced the architecture of the palaces and of
the middle-class villas which can still be seen today
while walking through the center. The many fountains
found in all the squares represent a peculiarity of
Stenico.
Other hamlets of the Municipality are:
Seo: the highest village in the valley with an altitude
of 823 meters.
Sclemo: it offers many interesting architectonic elements;
there is a plaque commemorating the Battle of Sclemo
that was fought during the Italian Risorgimento (1848).
Premione: Due to the many findings recalling the
pre-Romanesque Christian art, this village is commonly
considered of antique origins. It is divided into
two small centers separated by the wooded Valle di
Seo. On the right side and hidden inside a niche there
is a small frescoed effigy of the Madonna dating back
to 1864. There is another beautiful fresco painted
on a house in the middle of the village.
Villa Banale: it is a small center situated in the
southern area of the Altopiano del Banale, on the
fringe sloping down into the Sarca gorge.
Hamlets: Premione, Seo, Sclemo, Villa Banale.
