Rovereto,
Vallagarina e Altopiano di BrentonicoBrentonico.
The Brentonico plateau is situated between Lake Garda
and Vallagarina at an altitude varying from 500 to
2,070 meters. It offers wonderful views over the Po
plain, the Dolomites and of the whole alpine range.
Ever since the 16th century it has been renowned for
its pre-glacial flora studied by scholars from all
around the world and today it is visited by many organized
groups. The natural beauties are not the only attraction
of this mountain, as it is also possible to choose
from war-site itineraries, visiting the positions
and massive military works, or artistic routes. Economic
activities typical of this mountain with the huts
and agritur accommodation facilities are an interesting
way to get to know the local cuisine. The structure
of the village is due to the unification of the quarters
of Fontana and Lerà, Vigo and Fontechel. The
historical appearance of this center reflects its
role in the territory - high-class elegant palaces
dispersed with houses of rural architecture.
Given its position between the Po plain and the alpine
regions, Brentonico was deeply influenced both by
the cultures of Verona and Trento. In the 13th century,
the powerful family of the Castelbarco asserted itself
with the other local estates; between 1411 and 1509
this area, together with the whole Vallagarina, was
dominated by the Venetians and later it passed again
under the rule of the Prince Bishops of Trento. Despite
all these changes Brentonico managed to maintain its
authority thanks to the unusual legal insitution of
the Four Vicarates which lasted till 1810 and included
also Ala, Avio and Mori.
