This town is the valley´s administrative centre,
and boasts elegant palazzos and rural districts. This
is where the "situla" (ancient bucket-shaped
vase) was found, adopted as symbol by the local vine-growers.
The Gothic San Pietro is one of the valley´s
most interesting churches. Its interiors preserve
an especially rich array of paintings and the remains
of a 16th century wooden triptych. Famous is the porphyry
stone that commemorates the spot from where the German
artist Dürer painted Segonzano. Among Cembra´s
ancient customs, noteworthy is the "Canta dei
mesi", an allegorical masquerade of the mystery
play genre held every year in the last days of Carnival.
The local economy mainly hinges on porphyry quarrying
and on vine-growing and wine-making. Noteworthy is
the Cantina della Valle di Cembra winery, the highest
in Italy, which specialises in the production of the
excellent Müller Thurgau. Soft fruits are also
intensively grown.
