Spiazzo is a village of recent origins. At the beginning
there were only the church, the rectory and a number
of service buildings serving the nearby communities
of Mortaso, Borzago, Fisto and Chès. Its origin
is linked to a sanctuary dedicated to S. Vigilio.
Here in fact this bishop of Trentino was probably
martyred on June 26 405 during his last missionary
journey. According to the tradition where today the
high altar of the church of S. Vigilio is situated
there was the stone of Saturn which was knocked down
by the bishop provoking the strong reaction of the
pagan population.
However this place was dedicated to Christian worship.
The existence of an early-medieval, or maybe paleo-Christian
worship or of a sanctuary, came to light during the
excavations in 1961. Under the floor ruins of a Christian
room, probably dating back to before the 11th century,
were found.
