The documents on the religious and economic history
of Pinzolo bear witness to its medieval history and
to the existence in Pinzolo of the first "Compagnia
dei Battuti" in Trentino.
The municipal archive of Pinzolo has a recent version
of the statute of this Brotherhood. This group left
a more extensive and concrete series of documents
proving the devotion of its members. The "Battuti"
were a religious brotherhood formed by lay members
whose religion consisted of long prayers, severe punishments
and social and charity initiatives.
The important church with cemetery dedicated to S.
Vigilio is of ancient origins: it was probably built
before the 11th century; in the first decades of the
16th century it was not big. In 1539 Simone Baschenis
decorated the southern wall with the famous "Trionfo
della Morte" (triumph of death) and respective
"Danza Macabra", the Seven Cardinal Sins
and the "Resurrezione di Cristo" (Christ´s
Resurrection).
In 1823 Nepomuceno Bolognini was born in Pinzolo:
he was one of the most important figures of the Risorgimento
in Trentino. He founded in his village the SAT (Trentino´s
Alpinists Society) and contributed to the promotion
of the history and folkloric traditions of Pinzolo:
in line with his devotion to tourism and mountains,
Angiolino Binelli founded here the first Italian Alpine
Rescue Unit in 1952. During the First World War Pinzolo
suffered and was a very dangerous area since fighting
took place on the nearby Adamello. The consequent
poverty of Pinzolo and the whole Val Rendena compelled
many people to emigrate looking for jobs and better
living conditions. In 1969 a monument was erected
at the entrance of the village to commemorate the
knife-grinders from Pinzolo who travelled all around
the world grinding knives and blades.
