Lavarone e LusernaFolgaria.
The plateau of Folgaria (72.8 km²) is one of
the oldest localities of Trentino. By origin German-Cimbrian,
it mightily fought against feudal rule in the course
of the centuries in order to retain its independence
and autonomy as a township. That is also why it still
bears the honorary name "Magnifica Comunità".
Folgaria consists of seven hamlets: Costa, Serrada,
Guardia, Mezzomonte, San Sebastiano, Carbonare and
Nosellari. The plateau is a renowned tourist resorts
for summer and winter holidays. Ski enthusiasts will
enjoy the circuit called "Skitour dei Forti"
(included in the "Skirama Dolomiti"): 50km
of slopes with six 4-seater chair lifts, two toboggan
runs and two cross-country centres, Pass Ceo (at 1610m
- 35km of slopes) and Fort Cherle (at 1400m - 14km
of slopes).
It disposes of 19.000 sleeps, 64 hotels, 5 apartment
houses, 1 camping site, moutain huts and hundreds
of private apartments for tourists to rent.
Folgaria, Lavarone and Luserna are three distinct
localities linked by history. The elements they share
are: the German-Cimbric colonisation (10th - 13th
century) of which Luserna remains a living proof (´Cimbrian´,
the ancient language referable to Middle High German,
is still spoken there), and then the experience of
the rural communities the most significant example
of which is the so-called Magnifica Comunità
di Folgaria, the border struggles and the fortifications
of the First World War (1915-18) of which Fort Gschwent
of Lavarone - the museum fortress - together with
the other six forts disseminated throughout the territory
and connected one to the other via former military
roads, redoubts and trenches, are the most moving.
On the Altipiani Trentini, tourism has progressively
expanded both in winter and in summer. Tourists in
summer especially enjoy relaxation, sports, hikes
and excursions, while in winter they are attracted
by the top-level skiing resorts that offer a ski circuit
called Skitour dei Forti consisting of 40 km of downhill
ski slopes and three cross-country centres among the
most renowned of the entire Alps and site of many
national and international ski competitions.
