TrailsVernaccia di San Gimignano.
Gentle hills covered with vineyards, olive groves,
a patchwork of fields, green forests - no matter which
direction you come from, this is what will greet you
at San Gimignano. The skyline of medieval towers and
palaces of this unequalled gem, incredibly well preserved
and listed among UNESCO's World Heritage Sites, is
not the only wonder to be found in this part of Tuscany.
Following the Vernaccia di San Gimignano Trail means
entering the world of the "Vernaccia di San Gimignano
DOCG" wine. This wine, produced uniquely in this
Comune, boasts ancient origins and was even mentioned
in Dante's Divine Comedy as early as 1276.
It is a dry white wine having a pale straw yellow
colour, with a fine, sharp bouquet, and dry harmonious
taste. It is excellent as an aperitif, with seafood
hors d'oeuvres, accompanying all fish and crustacean
dishes, or with white meat. It is drunk chilled to
11-12°C. We are however also in a zone which produces
the most famous Italian red wine, Chianti, and all
Vernacccia producers also have vines for "Chianti
DOCG Colli Senesi". And what can we say about
the olive oil produced from the olive trees scattered
among the green hills around San Gimignano? It has
to be tasted on bruschetta, a plate of white beans,
or salad to be believed!
As we wander along this trail we can also encounter
little fields given over to the cultivation of the
Crocus sativus (saffron), an expensive and highly
prized product since the Middle Ages. So, welcome
- your pleasure and satisfaction in staying here will
be our reward - and hurry back soon!
