Many roads criss-cross the Florentine Hills and the
Comuni within them: Bagno a Ripoli, Barberino V.E.,
Certaldo, Fiesole, Figline V.no, Lastra a Signa, Montelupo
F.no, Montespertoli, Pelago, Pontassieve, Reggello,
Rignano S.A., San Casciano, Scandicci and Tavernelle
V.P. From four principle itineraries can be derived
numerous lesser ones which often surprise with their
unexpected pleasures and charms.
First Itinerary. From Florence, after Scandicci, SP 98 crosses
the wooded hill of Roveta as far as S. Vincenzo a
Torri, then take SP 12 for Ginestra. After La Luna,
you reach Lastra a Signa. Take SS 67 along the River
Arno as far as Montelupo Fiorentino, from where SP
73 leads to Malmantile. Vineyards, hills, various
arts and crafts, particularly of terracotta are the
main attractions of this area.
Second Itinerary.
From Cerbaia SP 4 leads to Montagnana, where you should
take the Via di Romita, passing through S. Quirico
in Collina, San Pancrazio and Romita. Join the main
road SS 2 and go as far as Tavernelle V.P. and Barberino
V.E. The itinerary follows SP 49 in the direction
of Marcialla, where SP 79 leads to Montespertoli,
and then descends to Baccaiano. This road especially
lets the visitor appreciate the gentle Florentine
Hills with their vines, olive groves, cypresses, villas
and castles.
Third Itinerary.
Leaving Florence in the direction of Galluzzo, at
Tavarnuzze, after Certosa, you proceed on SP 69 for
Impruneta, then head down SP 70 for Gersolè,
coming back onto the original route again. Proceed
to Grassina, Ponte a Ema and then on to Bagno a Ripoli.
Then towards S. Donato in Collina where you take SP
89 as far as Bombone. Then turn off onto SP 90 as
far as Rosano, returning eventually to Florence. After
crossing the River Arno, SS 67 leads to Sieci, where
you turn towards Molin del Piano, going up to Vetta
le Croci. You return to Florence via the historic
centre of Fiesole. This charming route is rich in
vineyards, olive groves, cottage industries, and historical
sites.
Fourth Itinerary.
Starting from Rignano sull'Arno, passing through S.
Clemente, you reach S. Ellero, from which the road
rises to Donnini, S. Donato and eventually Reggello.
From here you head for Figline V.no, and then follow
SP 16 in the direction of Ponte agli Stolli. Follow
SS 69 as far as Incisa Valdarno, from which SP 1 takes
you back to S. Donato in Collina, rejoining itinerary
3. This road lets you savour the delights of the Arno
Valley from both sides - an area rich in traditional
agricultural products and cottage industries.
