SpasPisa.
The territory, which the A.P.T. (Tourism Promotion
Body) is in charge of and that coincides with the
province of Pisa, offers a wide range of tourist attractions.
Art and culture find their highest expression in Pisa
and Volterra. As far as art is concerned, Pisa plays
the role of undiscussed protagonist: here was born
the renewal of architecture, sculpture and painting,
thus anticipating the great Italian Florentine Renaissance.
Volterra's roads, squares, churches and buildings
keep four millenniums of history, from the Etruscans
to the Romans, from the Middle Age to the Eighteenth
century. Other interesting places are: Calci with
the great Carthusian monastery, San Miniato, where
in the Middle Age the Swabian emperors had their seat,
Vicopisano with her walls and embattled towers, and
many other fortresses, churches and monasteries at
the top of the hills, along rivers and old roads.
Also the naturalistic and landscape heritage is very
important thanks to the Natural Park of Migliarino-San
Rossore-Pisaciuccoli, the Monte Pisano, the Hills
of Pisa and the Coast with Marina di Vecchiano, Marina
di Pisa and Tirrenia. Very interesting is the thermal
offer, as well, with the three modern resorts of Casciana
Terme, San Giuliano and Uliveto Terme. The production
activities are characterized by the industry of furniture
in Cascina, Ponsacco and Perignano, tanning industry
in Santa Croce and Castelfranco, "Piaggio"
industry in Pontedera and alabaster processing with
the old quarries of Castellina Marittima for the elegant
handcraft productions of Volterra alabaster. Then
the valued production of oil and wine that helps to
enrich a traditional cooking based on red meat and
fish.
