SpasGrosseto.
The territory is mainly identified with the Tuscan
Maremma. The 130 km of coast, along which strands,
pine-woods and stretches of superb cliffs alternate,
are interrupted by numerous coves that give hospitality
to tourist ports and wide and safe landing places:
Scarlino, Punta Ala, Castiglione della Pescaia, Marina
di Grosseto, Talamone, Porto S. Stefano, Porto Ercole,
Cala Galera and those of Giglio and Giannutri Islands.
These places together with Follonica and Principina
a Mare achieved a high tourist development degree
with good-level receptive and complementary structures,
in an area that kept all its natural features untouched.
The National Park of Maremma, Orbetello Lagoon, Burano
Lake, Accesa Lake, the marsh area of Diaccia Botrona
and the other numerous protected areas represent actual
heavens for nature-lovers. The countryside - where
the mounted hersdsmen on horseback following the herds
of cattle can still be met - and the hilly area -
once theater of raids of robbers - offer a higher
and higher rural hospitality. Saturnia, Petriolo and
Bagnolo di Monterotondo Marittimo (restructuring),
known because of the warm thermal water are endowed
with modern structures. Maremma owns a very interesting
cultural and artistic heritage referred to a wide
historical period of time. The numerous Etruscan traces
found in the graves that are spread on the whole territory
are kept in the archaeological museums of Grosseto,
Massa Marittima and Vetulonia and in the archaeological
areas of Sovana, Vetulonia and Roselle. The old towns
of Cosa and Roselle refer back to the Roman period.
Massa Marittima has many examples of medieval art
that remind of the flourishing 13-century Commune;
Pitigliano and Sorano are embellished by Renaissance
monuments and they found their roots in the old tufa
civilization. As regards the present-day art, we find
the Giardino dei Tarocchi of Capalbio, one of the
most impressive European monuments of environmental
architecture. The coloured spring sailing manifestations
and the autumn feasts of grapes, chestnut and oil,
the safaris on horseback complete the already wide
calendar of feasts and folklore. Many of them refer
to past traditions and legends: among them, we underline
the Balestro del Grifalco of Massa Marittima.
