This is the Tuscany of the butteri (local cowboys) and herds raised in the wild, but also of the porcupine, shy deer, fox and Mediterranean underbrush with its stunning scents and colours.
Protagonists of the landscape are the mountains of Uccellina, a green coastal ridge dotted with romantic remains of old watchtowers and a Cistercian abbey.
At the foot of the mountains, to the west we have the Tyrrheanian sea with its beaches and uncontaminated rocky coasts, while northward extends the plain of the Ombrone river delta.
With is swamps teeming with life, monumental pine forests and solitary pastures, Maremma is a Tuscany one never forgets.
