Garfagnana.
Garfagnana is Nature. Say its name, and you evoke
images of a proud and aloof land, practically isolated
from the rest of Tuscany. A treasure chest enclosed
between the Apuan Alps and the Appennines and scarred
by the Serchio river.
You cannot arrive in Garfagnana by chance. You cannot
lose your way, take the wrong road and find yourself
there: you are driven there by pleasure, by the knowledge
that you will gain from this experience and discover
an incredible, untouched culture and nature,
a rare sight to behold.
It is an unexpected landscape, revealing some of nature's
hidden secrets such as the Orrido di Botri, Tuscany's
Canyon etched by the waters of the streams that dive
headlong into this prehistoric chasm.
A narrow gorge that sends shivers down your spine,
with bushes growing on its walls, reaching towards
the sky, arduously searching for that single strip
of light that manages to sneak in.
In the meantime, a speckled brown trout slips through
cold waters and a golden eagle soars above your heads.
You can find the Grotta del Vento with its foot-bridge
suspended high above these marvels and the fascinating
names within - Baratro dei Giganti (The Giants' Abyss),
Salone dell'Infinito (The Room of Infinity) - giving
an idea of the sensations you can feel here.
Come and discover it for yourselves and with each
step you will find marvels and legends.
The Calomini hermitage and the story of a sacred image
which appeared only here, in this place with its perpendicular
slopes overlooking the valley of Turrite. Here a cave
sanctuary was built where you can also stay.
The Devil's Bridge near Borgo a Mozzano will capture
your imagination not only because of its appearance,
but also because of the legend that goes with it.
Of course, there are not only legends, there is also
the reality of welcoming townsfolk, jealous of their
folklore and gastronomic traditions. You will find
flourishing traditions everywhere, with jousts and
re-enactments of historical events, the singing theatre,
handicrafts, and all this accompanied by culinary
specialities based on chestnuts. This was the only
product found here in great quantities until after
the Second World War and was the food the people of
the valley survived on. Nowadays, alongside the chestnut
there are other ancient, but now fashionable products
such as spelt, mondiola and cheese.
Excursions in nature, simple and welcoming towns,
good cooking and traditions is the recipe that Garfagnana
has to offer.
