South Tyrol Museum of Fruit Growing.
One out of every hundred apples grown in the European
Union comes from Lana. With a yearly harvest of 60,000-70,000
metric tons, the community produces one tenth of all
orchard fruit from South Tyrol and one hundredth of
that from the EU. The South Tyrol Museum of Fruit
Growing, which opened in 1990, offers comprehensive
documentation of the historical development and current
situation of fruit farming in South Tyrol. It is housed
in the Larchgut residence in Niederlana (Lana di Sotto)
- a solid presence with a medieval residential tower
and a late Gothic annex. Topics covered include the
draining of the Adige (Etsch) River plain, forms of
cultivation, older and newer fruit varieties, pest
control, irrigation, and harvesting.
