Passeiertal valley mining museum on the Schneeberg mountain.
This mining museum is located on the Passeiertal
valley side of the Schneeberg massif. In addition
to 150 km of galleries, some of which are still
accessible, the mine contains the world’s
longest underground railway conveyor system (27
km). In medieval times this was Tyrol’s most
important lead and zinc mine and in 1486 during
its golden era up to 1000 miners were employed there.
In addition to the guided tours through the galleries
and the museum, attractions include the miners’
village which is Europe’s highest permanent
settlement at 2355 metres above sea level (7661
ft), the chapel and refuge. The Schneeberg is also
a central intersection of Alpine hiking routes and
an ideal starting point for high altitude excursions.
