TrapaniSalaparuta.
The fief belonged to the Paruta family, who founded
the town and gave it its name: sala, a Norman dialect
word, means dwelling and Salaparuta thus comes from
sala parutae, the dwelling of the Parutas. The old
town was completely destroyed by the earthquake
in January 1968, and rebuilt ex novo downvalley,
with a modem and rational layout.
The new Chiesa Madre contains a fine statue of
St Catherine, which survived the earthquake.
