TrapaniGibellina.
The mediaeval town which developed in the 14th c.
around the castle built by Manfred Chiaromonte was
destroyed by the great earthquake in 1968. The ruins
of old Gibellina have been covered over in a great
sheet of concrete, known as the cretto di Burri
from the name of the artist who created it, Alberto
Burri. Against this back- drop of ruins plays, concerts
and shows are periodically organized here.
The new Gibellina has been built some 18 km from
the old site, with broad streets and regu1ar blocks.
Some well-known Italian architects (Vittorio Gregozzi,
Giuseppe Samona’) contributed to its construction,
together with a number of artists who produced a
variety of works of sculpture. The Ethropological
Museum, in Viale Vespri Siciliani, and the Museum
of Modern Art, in Via Gemellaro, give us an idea
of the cultural aspirations of the town.
