TrapaniCustonaci.
It developed at the end ofthe 18th c. following
initiatives by the Bourbons to populate the area
with the granting of rights to un-cultivated land.
Especially worth visiting is the Santuario della
Madonna di Custonaci. The Santuario was a place
of worship as long ago as the 14th c., restructured
in the 16th c. with the addition of living quarters
and fortifications. It contains a 16th c. panel
painting of the Madonna. Outside the church is a
fine mosaic parvis made of river pebbles. On the
occasion of the festivity of Our Lady of Custonaci,
in August, the statue is brought by sea. There are
two lines of men wearing blackhats and carrying
shotguns, the classic lupara.
