SiracusaSortino.
In its territory are the ruins of the towns and
the necropolis of Pantàlica, the ancient
Hybla. The town of Sortìno belonged in feudal
times to the Moncadas and the Eredias and, after
1477, for about three centuries, to the Barons Gaetani.
Already seriously damaged by an earthquake in 1542,
it was razed to the ground by the earthquake in
1693. It wasrebuilt not far away, in its present
site, on the top of a hill, Cugno del Rizzo. Here
are the buildings of historical and artistic interest
in Sortino.
The Chiesa di Sant' Antonio Abate or del Collegio,
built in 1742, has in the vaults frescoes by Giuseppe
Crestadoro (1778). The Chiesa Madre, San Giovanni
Evangelista, was totally rebuilt in 1734 after being
destroyed by an earthquake. It has frescoes in the
vault and in the cupola of the apse, two paintings
by Crestadoro, St John the Evangelist and The Virgin
and St Gaetano, and The Deposition and St Michael,
attributed to Vito D' Anna. The 18th c. Chiesa dell'
Annunziata contains frescoes by Crestadoro and a
panel painting, The Annunciation, by an unknown
artist. There are more frescoes by Crestadoro to
admire in the Chiesa di San Sebastiano. In the Chiesa
del Monastero di Montevergine, rebuilt in the second
half of the 18th c., there are works by Sebastiano
Lo Monaco: The Driving of the Merchants from the
Tempie and The Triumph of Faith. A fine majolica
floor represents The Miracle of the Fish.
