SiracusaMelilli.
The town has been the subject of heated arguments
because of the pollution caused by the nearby chemical
plant at Priolo. It was also heavily bombed during
the last war. In feudal times Melilli be1onged to
the County of Augusta and with its castle it controlled
the road from Augusta to Syracuse.
The two important churches in the town: San Sebastiano,
built in 1751 to a project by Dumontier, a French
architect (fine facade with refined portals), restored
after 1990; and San Nicolo’. the Chiesa Madre,
founded in 1200, reconstructed in 1735. Both are
decorated with, among other things, paintings and
frescoes by Olivio Sozzi.
