Founded in 1628 by Baron Lucio Bonanno Colonna on
the site of a mediaeval hamlet, it subsequently
belonged with its fief to the Grifeos, Princes of
Partanna.
The town has a regular grid layout. The Chiesa
Madre, founded in the 18th c., was completed in
the 19th. The Chiesa del Càrrnine was built
in the 18th c. and altered in the 19th; the facade
was ruined in the earthquake in 1908, but soon restored.
The Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie ( 1720) was
built by the Spaniards on the occasion of their
victory over the Austrians.
