SiracusaCassaro.
It developed in the 12th c. around a fort that already
existed in Arab times (the modem narne of the town
comes from the Arabic Kasr, castle ). After the
earthquake in 1693, the ancient town was abandoned
and the modem one built on its present site. It
was a fief of the Gaetanis from the 16th c. to the
18th, and then of the Statellas after 1776.
The Chiesa Madre in Piazza Matrice is 17th c. in
origin but was rebuilt in the 18th. In the nave
of the 17th-18th c. Chiesa di Sant' Antonio Abate
there are pictorial decorations by Giuseppe Crestadoro
and an interesting 18th c. floor made of soldered
tiles.
