SiracusaCanicattini Bagni.
Founded by Marquis Mario Daniele in 1678, it expanded
especially after the earthquake in 1693, when it
absorbed the inhabitants of the destroyed town of
Noto. In its territory are prehistoric and Christian
necropolises, at Sant' Alfano and Martino, and 5th-
7th c. Byzantine necropolises at Olivela.
The elegant mansions of this town are characterized
by the sinuous, elegant art nouveau stone decorations,
testifying to the presence of a valid school of
masons who transformed and beautified the stone
from the local quarries. In Corso XX Settembre are
the Town Hall and the single-hall Chiesa Madre,
built in the 18th c. and altered in the 19th.
