SiracusaBuscemi.
It existed in the Norman epoch and is mentioned
by the Arab geographer Edrisi. It was later an important
feudal centre. The old town, on Monte San Nicolo’,
was destroyed by the earth- quake in 1693 and immediately
afterwards rebuilt a little further to the N, in
its present site.
The 18tb c. Chiesa Madre, dedicated to Natività
di Maria Santissima, is in Corso Vittorio Emanuele.
The church is characterized by the lively and dynamic
scenographic decorations of the exterior: the interior
has a nave and two aisles and contains a statue
of Our Lady of Sorrows by Filippo Quattrocchi, which
was in the Chiesa di Sant' Antonio; this building
also has dynamic external decoration. The Chiesa
di San Giacomo is particularly interesting. This
single- hall church still has its original elliptic
plan. The front portico is also elliptic and there
is a quadrangular presbytery at the far end.
