RagusaPozzallo.
It used to be an important harbour, and was the
property of Bemardo Cabrera, Count of Modica, from
the end of the 14th c. Cabrera obtained considerable
tax exemptions and in 1429 built an imposing tower
here, to defend the wheat-loader from pirate attacks;
the tower still preserves its fine ribbed cross
vaults. The town developed around the tower and
became an autonomous commune in 1829, the only one
by the sea in the province of Ragusa.
Opposite the tower is the neoclassical Palazzo
Musso (1926), with natural art nouveau features.
The nearby Chiesa Madre, at the top of a high ramp
of stairs, is clear and simple in style both inside
and out; it has a nave and two aisles, with little
double columns and side chapels. The Town Hall and
the public gardens, with a fine view over the sea,
are also in this part of the town (Via Veneto).
