Almo.
The originai Norman village of Monte Iahalmo developed
in the 14th c. with the construction of the castle
by Enrico Rosso, Count of Aidone. The village belonged
to the County of Modica from the 16th to the 18th
c.; destroyed by the earthquake in 1693, it was
rebuilt higher up on the plain at the top of the
mountain.
The Chiesa Madre, in Neo-Gothic style, in Piazza
Santo Antonio, contains a 12thc. Holy water stoup,
parts of sculptures in Norman and Byzantine style,
a crucifìx and a 15th c. silver cross. In
the same square we can admire the 18th c. Chiesa
di Sant'Antonio Abate, where there are various 15th,
16th and 17th c. paintings and sculptures. The Chiesa
di San Giovanni Battista in the square of the same
name is of considerable artistic interest. Work
began on the church in 1750, under the architect
Sinatra; it contains stucco decorations.
