The town was built on its present site following
the earthquake in 1693 which destroyed the Norman
village standing at a higher altitude, near Sopra
la Balza.
The 18th c. Chiesa di San Bartolomeo, frescoed
by Gaetano di Stefano, stands to one site of the
main thoroughfare, Corso XX Settembre. In Piazza
del Municipio stands the Chiesa Madre, which is
dedicated to Our Lady of the Annunciation and St
Joseph. Construction started in 1696 and was not
completed until 1937; the façade is in late
Renaissance style. It contains some good paintings
(in particular, Our Lady of the Annunciation by
Marcello Viery , 1790) and two statues, a gently
expressive St Joseph andaveryold, wooden St Bartholomew.
In the upper part of the village (named Cuozzo)
stands the baroque Chiesa di Sant'Antonio, 18th
c.
