The town was founded in 1699 by Gaspare la Grutta
in the vicinity of a mediaeval hamlet.
The town centre is Piazza Garibaldi, characteristically
octagonal in shape. Here we can see the Chiesa Madre.
The 14th c. ruins of the Roccella Tower, dating
from the old hamlet, can still be seen.
