The ancient nucleus of the town was to the N, on
the Terravecchia hill, before the 9th c.; it was
fortified by the Arabs and the Normans and took
on an important strategic role. The modem town developed
in the area known as the Terranuova, from the 17th
c. onwards.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria la Nuova, or Badia, has
a single nave, decorated by 18th c. stuccos. There
are works of the Gagini schooland a tabernacle by
G. Domenico Gagini. The Chiesa Madre (late 16th
c. and considerably restored in the 18th) contains
a statue of the Virgin Mary attributed to Domenico
Gagini and a precious decorated organ which used
to be in the Church of San Bartolomeo. The mediaeval
beautiful Cloister of Convento di San Francesco,
was opened again in 1994, after twenty years closed.
