Its origins are ancient, though not known with absolute
certainty: there was an Arab fortress here, it was
a city of the royal domain under the Normans, and
it was subsequently the fief of various overlords.
The Chiesa di San Giacomo, a vast and interesting
church, contains a good statue of the Madonna del
Soccorso, of the Gagini school. The mediaeval Chiesa
Madre stands in Piazza del Plebiscito: the five
ogival portal dates from 1234, while the facade
was redone in the 19th c.
