MessinaBarcellona Pozzo di Gotto.
The town consists of two former1y separate centres,
Barcellona and Pozzo di Gotto. Pozzo di Gotto already
existed in the 16th c., whi1e Barcel1ona flourished
in the 17th c. They became a single comrnune in
1835.
The Chiesa Madre (17th c.), consecrated to St Sebastian,
was demolished in 1936 and rebuilt in neoclassical
style in what is now Via Roma. It contains some
interesting paintings, including The Virgin Mary
and St Francis, works signed and dated (1606) by
Gaspare Camarda. In the sacristy there are other
fine works, such as St Basil, a 15th c. panel by
an anonymous artist, and an 18th c. reliquary. Also
worth a visit are the 18th c. Chiesa dei Basiliani,
the Biblioteca Comunale, with its large collection
of books, and the Manno and Jalari (Maloto) ethnological
museums.
