EnnaLeonforte.
Founded in 1610 by Nicolò Placido Branciforte,
on the gentle slope of a hill, in pleasant green
countryside with an abundance of water.
In the centre is the elegant Piazza Regina Margherita,
formerly called Piazza del Mercato (Market Square).
Of the old riding-school that Prince Branciforte
built more than three centuries ago only the stables
remain, in the square named after him. In the same
square are Palazzo Branciforte and the Chiesa di
San Giovanni Battista (17th-18th c.); the church
contains a painting by Marcantonio Raimondi, of
the school of Pietro Novelli, representing The Driving
of the Merchants from the Temple. The 18th c. Chiesa
Madre has an elegant façade and a quadrangular
campanile. The Chiesa dei Cappuccini, built in the
17th c. by the Brancifortes, contains some of the
farnily tombs and a fine painting by Pietro Novelli:
The Election of St Matthew to the Apostleship. In
the lower part of the town is an unusual fountain
with 24 spouts, known as the Granfonte (Big Fountain).
This too was built by the Brancifortes, in 1651.
Itis the first thing that we notice, on the left,
as we arrive at Leonforte from the Enna-Catania
motorway exit.
