EnnaGagliano Castelferrato.
Inhabited since pre-Greek times, the territory was
an Arab settlement and developed considerably around
the castle after the 12th c. The layout of the town
is typically mediaeval, with narrow winding streets
radiating from the main thoroughfare, Via Roma.
The Chiesa Madre, which stands on the site where
the castle used to be, was built in the 14th c.
and restructured in the l6th. In the interior there
is a Gagini-style tabernacle and a 17th c. carved
wooden choir. The Chiesa di Santa Maria di Gesù
contains one of Fra' Umile da Petralia's fine crucifixes.
A visit to the numerous necropolises is extremely
interesting, with their rock-cut tombs, evidence
of a settlement in the area in very remote times.
