Traces of a prehistoric Bronze Age village have
been found in the vicinity. The area of the urban
centre in classical times has also been located,
as well as remains of the Byzantine settlement.
In the Middle Ages the town spread around the castle.
In the highest part of the town, in Piazza Matrice,
is Sant'Ambrogio, the Chiesa Madre, built in the
16th c. and restructured, also in the façade,
in 1925. In the Chiesa del Carmine is a crucifìx
by Fra' Umile da Petralia. The Chiesetta di San
Sebastiano is a composite and pleasant little church.
