EnnaCatenanuova.
Many towns are mediaeval in origin, but Catenanuova
is not so old. It was founded in 1754 by Andrea
Riggio at the meeting place of a number of traditional
routes of communication. The great mass of Etna
dorninates the wide spread of the surrounding countryside.
In the town the layout of the streets is absolutely
regular, with the streets at right-angles to each
other, centred round the Chiesa Madre and the Palazzo
del Signore. Nearby (about 2 km away) is the Fondaco
Cuba, a farrnstead where Wolfgang Goethe stayed
in the 18th c., asalso Victor Amadeus II of Savoy
and Queen Maria.
