EnnaAidone.
This little town possibly began to develop in the
12th c. around the Castle and the Priory of Santa
Maria la Cava. It flourished under the Normans,
the Swabians and the Aragonese.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria la Cava, at the centre
of the town, was built, according to some sources,
by Countess Adelaide, in 1134, and to others, in
the 14th c. In the course of time it was frequently
altered, most noticeably in the 18th c. Traces from
the 14th c. are still visible in the apses. Among
the other churches there is San Domenico, 15th c.
in origin but with a baroque façade. The
Gresti Castle, located on a hill N of Aidone, used
to play a role of great strategic importance; it
was probably founded by the Normans, but it has
been frequently modified and in some parts it is
badly ruined; stark and massive in appearance, it
is dorninated by the high square keep. In feudal
times it passed from the Chiaromontes to the Rossis
and the Gioenis. The archaeological items found
at Serra Orlando, about 6 km from Aidone, are thought
to come from the ancient city of Morgantina (q.
v.). Most of the finds are displayed in the Aidone
Regional Archaeological Museum, situated in a building
which used to be a Capuchin convent.
