CataniaBelpasso.
Its former name was Malpassu; it was destroyed by
the eruption of Etna in l669, rebuilt at a lower
altitude with the name of Fenicia Moncada, and again
razed to the ground by the earthquake in l693. It
was rebuilt two years later, in its present site
and with its present name, with a regular criss-cross
layout designed by Giovanni Bellia.
Giovanni Bellia also built the Chiesa Madre, Santa
Lucia, which has fine portals. The Palazzo Butera
and Palazzo Sclafani (both 18th c.) are also of
architectural interest.
