CaltanissettaSan Cataldo.
The town was founded in 1607 by Nicolò Galletti,
on the site of a pre-existing hamlet. The name was
chosen in honour of the Bishop of Taranto (Saint
Cataldo is in fact the patron saint of Taranto).
In the modern town, the l8th c. Chiesa dei Padri
Mercedari contains a statue of the Madonna by the
Palermo sculptor Salvatore Bagnasco. The Chiesa
Madre, in the oldest part of the town, dates from
l665, as recorded in the deed drawn up by the Notary
Mammano.
