AgrigentoGrotte.
The splendid ancient Greek city of Erbesso may have
stood in its territory; in mediaeval times it belonged
to the Ventimiglia and the Montaperto families,
and from the early l8th c. to the La Grua Talamanca
family. The town gets its name from the numerous
caves in the area, some actually in the town itself.
The town layout is still typically mediaeval, although
some demolition was carrried out in the 19th c.
for the construction of a long main street, Corso
Garibaldi. In Piazza Umberto, besides the Chiesa
del Carmine (16th c.), there is the Town Hall, which
stands on the site of a forrner Carmelite convent.
The typically l8th c. Chiesa Madre, with its geometric
façade and attached pilaster-strips, stands
in the Piazza del Popolo.
