AgrigentoCianciana.
Founded, with licentia populandi, in 1640, by the
Ioppolo family. Its original name was Sant'Antonio
di Cianciana and from the 18th c. it was a fief
of the Bonanno family. The town spread considerably
in the 19th c., after the discovery of the mineral
deposits of sulphur at Grotticelle and Falconara.
The most representative buildings stand along the
two intersecting main streets, Salita Regina Elena
and Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Palazzo Toffolo (17th
c.) is on Corso V. Emanuele, near to which is the
Chiesa Madre (also 17th c.). Further beyond the
Salita Regina Elena we can find the Chiesa del Purgatorio
(17th c.) and the Chiesa di Sant. Antonino, at the
S extremity of the town.
