AgrigentoCattolica Eraclea.
Its territory comprises the ancient Eraclea Minoa,
near Capo Bianco at the mouth of the Platani, a
town of possible Mycaenean origin. The present.day
town was founded in 1610 by Don Biagio Isfar e Corelles,
with the name of Cattolica. It was a fief of the
Bosco famly until 1770, and then belonged to the
Bonanno family, the Princes of Roccafiorita. The
adjective Eraclea was added in 1874 in orderto recall
the historical link with the ancient Greek city.
The Chiesa Madre is dedicated to the Holy Ghost;
founded half-way through the 16th c. and altered
in the following c., it has a single nave and the
façade is classical in inspiration. The Town
Hall and former Palazzo del Signore stand in Piazza
Umberto.
