AgrigentoCasteltermini.
The first nucleus of the town was probably the Arab
hamlet of Chiudia; the present-day town was founded
in 1629 by O. Vincenzo Maria Termini.
In Piazza Duomo stands the Chiesa Madre, 17th c.
in origin but altered at different times until the
19th c. A church with a nave and two aisles, it
contains two paintings by the Palermo artist Giuseppe
Velasquez (Velasco), The Adulteress and The Expulsion
of the Profaners of the Temple; among the works
of sculpture, there is a statue of St Francis of
Paola, by Salvatore Bagnasco. The same square contains
the churches of Sant'Antonio di Padova and of SS.
Cosma e Damiano, neither of which is open for religious
functions. They both have a single nave and were
built respectively in 1645 and 1767. At the end
of Via Umberto I is the Chiesa di San Giuseppe,
founded in the 17th c. and altered in the 18th c.;
it contains works by Bagnasco and some canvases
by local painters.
