AgrigentoAragona.
Founded in 1606 by Baldassare III Naselli, Count
of Comiso, who named it Aragona, in honour of his
mother Beatrice Aragona. In 1615 the Naselli farnily
obtained the title of Princes of Aragona, and owned
the town until 1812.
The town lay-out is most unusual: the streets in
the outer part are regular, while the inner part
is an intricate network of lanes and alleys. The
17th c. Baronial Palace stands in Piazza Umberto
I. The building, which underwent considerable modification
in the 17th c., is massive in appearance. But graced
by the loggias on the main floor. Today it is the
seat of the Town Hall. The Chiesa Madre, in Piazza
Madrice, dedicated to the Re Magi, contains a fine
18th c. Nativity Scene. The Chiesa del Rosario (used
as a Museum of Sacred Art) and the Chiesa del Purgatorio,
both 18th c., are in the same square.
