Valle dell'Olivo.
The bands of dry stone walls, where thousands of
olive trees grow, characterize the area around Imperia,
consisting of five valleys around the Steria, San
Pietro, Prino, San Lorenzo and Imperia rivers. The
villages, built around the year one thousand atop
the hills by a coastal people fleeing pirates, preserve
true artistic gems.
Prestigious Baroque and Neoclassical churches in
the historic centers alternate with the panoramic
vistas near the lookout towers and castles from
the medieval period, which can be reached along
ancient mule tracks leading from the valley floor
to the tops of the hills. These places are ideal
destinations for savoring the local cuisine, based
on vegetables and aromatic herbs and seasoned with
the excellent olive oil produced in the stone presses.
Mushroom picking, recreational fishing in the rivers,
and various outings are among the pleasant options
for outdoor activities.
