Val d'Aveto.
The valley that opens behind the Gulf of Tigullio
(Eastern Ligurian sea) is a giant natural amphitheatre
in which hills covered with abundant pastures alternate
with dense conifer forests and large mountains.
Among the peaks, that of Maggiorasca (1,799 meters;
5,902 ft) is the tallest in the Ligurian Apennines.
Throughout the area, the variety of the landscape
makes picturesque excursions possible year round:
on foot through the fields painted by thousands
of spring flowers, or the numerous chestnuts, beeches,
and firs, where squirrels and wolves are common.
There are many breathtaking views and pockets of
untouched nature to be discovered on skis (the area¿s
facilities are well-equipped) or along the hiking
and mountain biking paths.
Ancient mills, mines to be visited on board small
trains in Val Graveglia, stone villages, steeples,
and traditional flavors: these are some of the signs
of the rural and agricultural civilization that
developed in the Middle Ages thanks to the hard
work of monks from Bobbio, whose great 12th century
Abbey of Borzone still remains.
