Portofino.
In the greenery of Monte di Portofino on the western
slope of the promontory, the tourist comes into
true contact with rural and coastal culture and
feels in perfect harmony with a wild, finely-balanced
natural environment. The variety of climatic conditions
and the geological substratum, which shows the signs
of man's centuries-old presence, help to make this
protected area unique from the point of view of
history, landscape and nature. The balance between
the ecosystem and human culture is quite exceptional
in the eastern area: olive and chestnut trees and
the sea are perfectly integrated into an efficient
agricultural activity that is environmentally-friendly,
with its rural houses, cultivated terracings and
votary chapels.
At the heart of the mountain scenery is the Mediterranean
maquis, erica and wild strawberry trees; the village
of San Fruttuoso, with its Benedictine abbey, witnesses
the important influence that the monastic order
has had on the destiny, natural environment and
cultural identity of this location.
