Sarzana e Lunigiana.
The Lunigiana, the final strip of Liguria bordering
Tuscany, embraces a long stretch of the Magra river
and its mouth. This frontier area preserves traces
of an important history, that of Luni, a rich and
powerful Roman city until the 3rd century A.D.,
thanks to its crescent-shaped port. An important
archeological site remains of the city's former
splendor: an elliptical arena, featuring well-preserved
corridors, cells, and passageways from which exited
beasts and gladiators.
Heir to the power of Luni, in the Medieval period,
was Sarzana. The imposing fortress of Sarzanello
and the entire city, in its ancient structure, testifies
to this transfer of power. Throughout the Magra
valley, visitors will encounter other large castles
at Ortonovo, Nicola, and Castelnuovo.
In Lunigiana, nature also exerts its undisputed
sway in the area of the Montemarcello Magra river
park, a 4,300-hectare (10,600-acre) preserve where
migratory birds build their nests and the rich Mediterranean
fauna can be explored along the trails, mule tracks,
and walking paths in the protected area.
